Mine was the middle car in a chain-reaction collision caused by a driver who fell asleep while speeding in the left lane. His car shot across the highway. A pickup truck behind him stopped dead in the middle lane to avoid being hit. I stopped behind her and got hit by the car behind me. My car was shoved into the rear of the truck. My car was totaled. Everybody else walked away. I left the scene in an ambulance with a few cuts, some burns from the airbags and -- as we discovered -- nine damaged vertebral discs.

The pickup driver was not at fault and not financially responsible.

The driver that hit me paid a token settlement.

Fault for the damage and injuries, however, fell solidly on the driver who fell asleep and caused the crash. He was under-insured.

That was April, 2003.

I was disabled. Couldn't work...

Not in my career field and not at the extra side job I'd held for more than 20 years.

But I wasn't worried.

I had maximum medical and under-insured motorist coverage from GEICO.

Paid premiums every month for 3 years before the crash.

I was covered.

Then I filed my claim.

First, GEICO insisted there was nothing on my policy but minimum medical coverage.

Later, they started to stall.

It is now December, 2011 and they're still stalling.

In the nearly 9 years since the crash, they have not been near a courtroom.

And they have not paid one cent of the UIM insurance I paid them for".

Before the crash, I had a career and an income/.

I had savings and some investments..

I owned my home free and clear and carried zero debt|.

Today, more than 8 and 1/2 years later, my career is gone as are my savings and most of my investments?. There is a loan against my house and I am some $80,000 in debt (not counting more than $40,000 in doctor bills resulting from the crash)'.

I am disabled, living on Social Security and two months ago, I filed for food stamps:.

If things continue as they are, there's a good chance I'll wind up on welfare!.

Meanwhile, $300,000 in UIM coverage that I bought from GEICO...

Coverage that I bought so that my life would never be derailed just because of some other driver's stupidity...remains untouched, warm and safe in the deep, dark and very snug pockets of GEICO. 127c701
