I have been disappointed in Geico's commercials for the several years. Their green mascot has been flat and boring. Now we have to listen to a squealing pig. First the pig is riding in a mini van squealing all the way home. That's really annoying". Now the pig is flying down a zip-line squealing/. Who is your audience for this commercial? You lost me the first time you introduced a pig.. Then to top this you introduce a bad karaoke singer|. You add the Abe Lincoln commercial that was painful to watch:. Maybe your marketing team needs to concentrate on your demographics?. You missed the boat on the over 50 crowd". I am hoping the,.pig commercial is not going to be a Superbowl commercial. 127d02c

Great points - but how can we be SURE that negative, attention grabbing commercials (the Geico pig, and negative campaign ads) actually have an effect - an effect that is NOT washed out or counter-acted by people like me who will definitely NOT purchase products or endorse candidates who do this. You're right - I "remember the name" - but I'll go to the ends of the earth to AVOID that name. Maybe I'm unique - I've boycotted Burger King since 1981 when they started their "Aren't You HUNGRY?" commercials. Blame it on the ad agencies, not the product (or candidate), but I vote with my feet and I think MANY people are like me. I'd like to see the research on actual impact. My hypothesis is that the Ad geniuses just "think" it will work, because it's conventional.

The point of marketing is to grab your attention. They seem to have grabbed yours. Despite the fact that you don't particularly care for the pig, if you're standing in the other room getting a drink during commercials, wouldn't you peek your head back in to see the TV if you heard something shouting "Weeeee!" Whether or not you like the pig, they got you to look at the screen and it's memorable enough for you to think "Geico" whenever you see a pig or hear that commercial. Maybe you'll never use Geico for insurance, but at least they got their name out there. That's how they look at it. I personally don't use Geico because I've found that AAA has rates about 40% lower. Next, you're right, they lost the over 50 crowd, but you're not their demographic anyway. They're looking for a younger crowd they can milk for decades, not someone who's old enough to sign up with The Hartford through AARP and get rates Geico couldn't even come close to. In the end, I don't care for the Geico gecko or the pig either, but I can appreciate the marketing campaign for what it is and for how effective it is.

Maybe you shouldn't watch so much television.
